November marked another significant milestone in the UK’s transition to clean transport, with battery electric cars accounting for 26.4% of all registrations - their second strongest performance of 2025.
So far in 2025, BEV registrations have risen by 23%, reflecting a consistent trend of drivers moving away from petrol and diesel vehicles, both of which are experiencing ongoing declines. Diesel, in particular, has dropped nearly 17% year-to-date.
This month’s developments extend beyond domestic progress, highlighting international uncertainty. As the UK advances with the ZEV Mandate, political signals from Europe suggest a different direction. Reports from Brussels indicate the European Commission is considering proposals to ease the 2035 phase-out of combustion engines, largely influenced by German lobbying.
The contrast is clear. While some in Europe question the feasibility of meeting these targets, the UK market demonstrates the opposite: carmakers are achieving them with ease. Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes all rank among the top performers for BEV sales, each increasing their electric market share.
The UK’s trajectory is becoming more defined each month. Drivers are making decisive shifts, fossil fuel models are steadily declining, and electrification is now the primary driver of market growth.
