Waymo has released a new update highlighting the safety benefits of its robotaxi service. The company reports that it has now accumulated more than 300 human lifetimes of driving experience, demonstrating clear safety advantages.
Across 270 million miles of fully autonomous driving, Waymo states that its vehicles have prevented injuries to at least 841 people. This marks a significant increase from 544 avoided injuries reported in December, showing exponential growth in safety impact.
Waymo’s latest analysis covers over 270 million miles of autonomous operations through June 2026 - equivalent to driving the length of Route 66 more than 110,000 times. The data includes five major metropolitan service areas: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.
The company reports an 82% reduction in injuries and a 95% reduction in serious injuries. These improvements suggest that such services could warrant subsidies to protect more people, though a strong business case for organic growth remains important.
Waymo emphasizes that its safety impact is most significant where road users are most vulnerable. The Waymo Driver reduces injury-causing crashes involving pedestrians by 93%, cyclists by 86%, and motorcyclists by 82%.
Waymo invites readers to view the full data and methodology. The Waymo Driver also undergoes a formal safety review before public deployment, with acceptance criteria detailed in a published paper.
